In this episode of AI for Local Impact, we spotlight the Makerere University Center for AI in Uganda, a multidisciplinary lab emerging as a center of excellence in responsible AI for development.
Led by Dr. Joyce Nakatumba-Nabende, the lab is advancing research across health, agriculture, and natural language processing. Innovations from the lab include, computer vision models that diagnose crop diseases and speech recognition systems that deliver agricultural advice in local languages.
The lab is committed to capacity building, integrating students into live research projects to ensure AI systems are contextually relevant, locally informed, and sustainable.
This podcast is part of the AI4D program, supported by Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).
