These days, this sound is being heard across Iran. It forms the backdrop of many protests.
This music is called The Epic Symphony of Khorramshahr.
Khorramshahr—meaning “the flourishing and joyful city”—is a city in southwestern Iran. During the Iran–Iraq War, after 32 days of house-to-house resistance, the city fell to Iraqi forces. It is said that around 7,000 military personnel and civilians were killed during these clashes. After 19 months of occupation, the city was liberated in May 1982 by the Iranian army and returned to Iranian territory.
The liberation of Khorramshahr has become a symbol of epic struggle and collective passion in contemporary Iran. Majid Entezami, an Iranian composer, wrote and performed this symphony by blending indigenous instruments of southwestern Iran—primarily percussion—with modern orchestral instruments, as well as the daf, a drum deeply associated with Iranian epic tradition and Sufi spirituality.
The soul of the symphony is the sound of people’s house-to-house resistance. Alongside echoes of war and heroism, the music is grounded in the region's local musical traditions. Beneath its epic character, the work also carries melodies of mourning and lamentation specific to the area. At times, the music becomes harsh and almost unlistenable; at others, it propels the listener forward. It is a mirror of the Iranian spirit—one that rises phoenix-like from hardship and suffering.
Today, this music has been reclaimed by the people, and more than thirty years after its creation, it has once again become a driving force for them.
