Annually in Uganda, about 10 per 1,000 live births—roughly 1,400 children—are born with or diagnosed with Spina Bifida, according to the Ministry of Health. Spina Bifida is a birth disorder that experts explain as a congenital neural tube defect, where the spinal cord does not close properly during the first month of pregnancy, and scientists say it is currently incurable. Today, we meet Merab Asiimwe, who, despite being diagnosed with Spina Bifida at a young age, has shown resilience that earned her academic triumph and a job before graduating.
