What is osmotic pressure and how does that relate to plant growth? Osmotic pressure is really a term that describes the movement of salt within water and the pressure that is exerted by this process. How does it relate to plant growth? That’s what really matters to us.

So think of it this way: when we have a plant, water and salt will move to where there is more water and salt, so if this plant has a greater salt content than the root zone, water and salt will move up and be evaporated on to the atmosphere, the salt will be metabolized in the plant’s processes. This is what we want, okay?

If we have an excess of salt in the root zone, that’s going to hold on to the water and the plant is literally going to start to fight for every drop of water and nutrient. If there is too much salt in this root zone, the osmotic pressure becomes so great that it is holding the water and salt in the root zone and the plant is having a very difficult time trying to take up the water in the nutrient.

It’s very important that we always have more salt in our plant material than we have in our root zone. That way, the water and salt will always go up.

Now this does depend on the size of the plant, right? That’s why if we have a plant that’s 12-feet tall, because it has such a greater content of salt in its system and the drawing power that that exerts, you could feed it at higher levels. If you have a plant that’s 1-foot tall, it has less drawing power, less salt in its system, you can’t feed it at this high level.

It’s important to understand what kind of salt levels your plant can tolerate and that way you will be able to maintain a good rate of metabolic processing of water and nutrient.
