RABINDRANATH TAGORE (1861-1941)*
Born Rabindranath Thakur in (modern day) Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Tagore came from one of the wealthiest and most politically prominent families in Calcutta; his father was a religious reformer; his grandfather was an industrialist. Tagore was initially educated at home before attending a private school in Brighton, England (1878) and then on to University College London to study Law (dropped out). Tagore started to manage his vast ancestral estates in 1890 while continuing to produce a variety of writing. He was awarded The Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913; the first non-European person to win this award. Tagore was knighted by the king of England in 1915 but returned it in 1919 as a response to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in which up to 1500 peaceful Indian protesters were shot by the British Army. In the years that followed, Tagore travelled widely and was involved in many political and social causes. Died in 1941 in Kolkata, India. Worldwide, he is one of the most celebrated and awarded writers of all time.
