This is a Autogefühl pre-view of the all-new BMW X1.

Some cars take ages to get the new generation, BMW tops up its X1 crossover after only six years. Over 700.000 cars have been sold and now it is being made more suv-ish.

So far, the X1 was really a crossover, rather flat and more like an allroad estate - and it had rear-wheel drive if you didnt pick the all-wheel-drive.

Now, the engine is not placed lengthwise anymore, but across - and it will start with front-wheel drive as the X1 now shares the platform of the 2-Series Active Tourer and Gran Tourer. That means less typical BMW DNA, but more space for passengers and luggage on the inside.

Still, the car doesn’t grow, but will be 1,5 cm shorter, will have a 9 cm shorter wheelbase but will gain 5,3 cm in height. That creates a more spacious feeling in the interior and also makes it possible to put the seating position higher. The luggage compartment will grow by 85 litres or even 200 litres more when having the rear seats folded.

New optional features are full-LED headlights, Dynamic Damper Control, Head-Up Display and the Driving Assistant Plus system that includes the Adaptive Cruise control, lane departure warning, emergency city braking and more.

We think that its good that the X1 becomes rather a small SUV now, as it didnt have a really good SUV seating position so far. And probably, X1 customers wont care so much about rear- and front-wheel drive like in other models.
