Gong Gil, is a gorgeous, effeminate street clown found himself in a wild love triangle set in a 16th century Joseon royal court with another make clown and the king. The film sold a mind-blowing 12.3 million tickets, grossed a jaw-dropping 6.5 billion Korean Won in its first week alone, and a whooping $74.4 million worldwide sale.

JG, then the unknown star, became the most talked-about man in South Korea and in Asia which we call now a hallyu wave.

To this day, Lee Joon-Gi still expresses how grateful he is for Gong Gil, his movie role that allowed him to best shine with his love for acting. It’s even admirable because he did not just land the role easily. He had to beat a staggering 3000 other actors during auditions. And he once said, “Everyone is good-looking, I had to do something to stand out.” He knew he had to embody the character, think like Gong Gil, so he busted out an acrobatic stunt, which later on added in the film, doing a split with legs spread wide to impress the producers, and boy, did he nail it.

He is known for having some serious martial arts skills so that stunt was really piece of cake for him. He’s got a fourth-degree black belt in taekwondo, a first degree black belt in taekkyeon and hapkido, and recently had a blue belt in jiu jitsu. Add those to his poignant gaze, when these features come together, and you’ll see his signature deep, and intense mind-blowing acting. His piercing stare meets his deep emotions, and it’s like fireworks explode on the screen. 🥹❤️‍🔥🔥
