Here are six French half bail Mitchell reels from my collection of 15.
Top middle and top left are reels from approx 1949.
The boxed reel is a very early Mk3 from 1950 / 51 and is very close to mint condition.
It's box is original and correct for the reel, being the last of earlier Mk2 box.
The two reels either side of the boxed reel are, again, early Mk3's (the bail angle from the string guide and dumpy string guide itself are a tell tail sign of their 1950-52 time of manufacture; this changes back to a flatter curve later on).
The reel top right, is a near mint example of a later Mk3, with the more tapered string guide.
The internals of these reels also give away their production dates (foundry marks, gear design, A/R switch construction, crank arm slotting etc).
Internally, the earliest reels here have brass inserts in the transfer gears, and a wrap around post A/R spring wire; they also have a thinner ocillating gear, simpler bail spring and aluminium rotor gears, though these last two features also cross over to the first Mk3's.
