"So, what we know until now is that there has been a robbery of one of the bank's agencies inside European Parliament. It was a man alone who came in (to) the bank, who showed a gun or something which looks like a gun; we don't know exactly if it was a real one or not but he frightened the personnel in the bank so they decided to give him the money that was in cash at the moment and he immediately left the bank. The bank has also very quickly alerted the security service of the parliament. We closed the door of the parliament and now we are checking."

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Jaume Duch Guillot, European Parliament spokesman:
"It shows that when you receive more than 15-thousand people in a single day, 100 percent security never exists but this is, let's say, a public and a very open parliament and we prefer to still to be a very open parliament. Of course, it's not the same if he came with a real gun or with a fake one because if it is a fake it's very difficult to identify but we are just waiting for the details before, let's say, taking decisions or trying to understand what happened."

STORYLINE
A lone criminal has robbed a bank at the European Union Parliament in Brussels on Thursday and made off with an undisclosed sum.
Parliament spokesman Jaume Duch Guillot said the man showed staff at the in-house bank, ING, what looked like a gun and sped off as soon as he was given the money from a vault.
Guillot said bank staff immediately alerted the security service of the parliament.
Security closed the doors of the parliament and checked the building with teams of police and sniffer dogs.
No one was injured in the robbery.
Guillot said the legislature is visited by some 15-thousand people, including dignitaries and top level politicians, making it difficult to have foolproof security at all times.
"100 percent security never exists," Guillot said especially in such an open parliament such as the EU.
But he insisted that despite the robbery, the EU preferred to continue being "a very open parliament."
The sprawling EU complex covers several blocks in central Brussels.
Police were still looking for the robber by Thursday night.
The security breach occurred one day after the EU head office said it would tighten security to counter the threat of espionage.
