How to use a 5 gallon bucket for the garden

Simple and cheap. My husband saved the day with his help to get this done before bed one night, and man, it made my week. I’m trying 5 gallon buckets as a planter. The difference being I’m using half gallon jugs in the bucket to store water and water the roots. The hope is that the plant will grow bigger and better. We will see how it ends up working. Have you tried something similar in the past? If so how did it work?

Start by making a small holes about and inch from the bottom of the jug you are using, and a few “overflow” wholes about and inch on top of your small holes in the jug. The jug can be anything, for example, a coffee can, or milk jug. Then add a PVC or some type of pipe to add the water into the jug from the outside. Optional is to glue the pipe to the lid if there is extra space in between. Place it in the bucket and cover it halfway with the soil your using. Then add your plant and adjust as needed. Give the plant a good drink from the top the first time. Then, fill the jug via the pipe as needed. Note, if you're watering and the overflow is driping, means you are all set for a few days. Depending on your jug size and bucket size, more or less water will be needed.
