This video explains and demonstrates two rappel methods for deploying an escape system - Both standard positioning as well as feet down orientation.
Remember there are 3 - 4 main elements to exiting a window or off a roof safely: First is establishing an appropriate anchor, Second is attaching the escape system to your belt or harness (if it's not already pre-attached), Third is negotiating the sill or roof edge and Fourth is the rappel or descent to the ground or safe evac point - This video focuses mostly on the rappel.
The demo was performed using a CMC Escape Artist with a substantial object as the anchor. Students in in the H.E.A.T.T. (High Emergency Advanced Tactics Training) program have the opportunity to use a variety of escape systems and components, including:
Rope from CMC, Sterling and RIT Rescue
DCDs - Including the CMC Escape Artist, Sterling F4, Petzl EXO (tactical) and the HALO by Xtreme Rescue
Carabiners from CMC, Petzl, SMC and Black Diamond
Anchor Hooks - Including the CMC Flash, NARS/RPI, Crosby, Meridian and Skedco
Escape Belts and Harnesses from Gemtor, RIT Rescue, Morning Pride, Xtreme Rescue and Baldwinsville.
Even though not shown in the Instructor demo, it is critical to use full fall arrest protection anytime students are training at height with an escape system - Regardless if it's for the first or hundredth time they've bailed.
Train, Stay Prepared, Be Aggressive, Make the Save - SURVIVE!
