Stories can change your life. Stories influence the decisions we take about where to study, or work or live. They influence major decisions about migrating to another country. Using the example of the negative perceptions of Kerala, his home state in India, he shows how negative narratives, by cherry picking data, can influence decisions to migrate for studies and work, despite the good record of the state on many metrics of development. He shows how it is possible to counter such negative narratives by crafting a positive narrative and thereby change the course of our lives and work. Balagopal Chandrasekhar graduated in economics from Loyola College, Madras University, and joined the IAS in 1977. He served in Manipur and Kerala before resigning in 1983 to establish a venture producing hi-tech biomedical devices. This venture became one of the world’s largest makers of blood bag systems, exporting to over 50 countries. In 2012, he sold the company to a leading Japanese medical firm and transitioned to investing in startups, mentoring entrepreneurs, writing, and travel.
Balagopal served as Chairman of Federal Bank Ltd. and holds positions on various Boards. With his wife, Vinita, he established the ANAHA Trust, funding projects in primary health, education, and rural livelihoods in Kerala and Manipur.
He authored four books: 'On a Clear Day You Can See India', 'The View from Kollam', 'Maveli & Markets: How SUPPLYCO held the Price Line', and 'Below the Radar'. He is active on LinkedIn and Facebook where he is followed for his insights on contemporary affairs. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
