India To Expand Strategic Fuel Reserves After Gulf Crisis, Targets Month-Long Energy Buffer

Описание: India has decided to significantly expand its strategic reserves of crude oil, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) after the Persian Gulf crisis exposed vulnerabilities in the country's energy security. The Oil Ministry has constituted a committee to identify suitable locations, recommend storage models and examine the balance between underground and overground facilities. The long-term objective is to maintain fuel reserves capable of meeting nearly a month's domestic demand.

Currently, India's strategic crude reserves total around 39 million barrels, covering roughly eight days of imports, while long-term LPG storage is sufficient for only about two days of consumption. The near closure of the Strait of Hormuz earlier this year disrupted energy supplies and sent global prices soaring, highlighting the need for larger emergency stockpiles. The government is also exploring floating LNG terminals and additional underground caverns to strengthen long-term energy resilience.
