65 days. That's how long Robert Stern had with his wife Jill after her brain tumor diagnosis.
She was the love of his life. She remains the love of his life.
This episode is different. Robert opens up about loss, grief, and how he turned pain into lyrics.
Jill had a headache. A brain scan revealed an aggressive tumor. Less than 65 days later, she was gone. Robert started writing. Prolific writing about loss. Then dating. Then the complicated emotions that come with moving forward while still holding on.
He wrote a song called "If I Get To Heaven" about still loving her. It's on his website.
Another song, "For Certain I'm Hurtin'," started 40 years ago when he met Bill Baker. Bill wrote most of it. Four decades later, a Vegas songwriter who's written major hits took the song and added to it.
Three people across 40 years collaborated on one song about heartbreak.
Robert's rule when he started dating: if he stayed with someone more than a week, a lyric might come out of it. That's how "That's How It Is" was born. "Hope for the future and a life full of joy. You're never quite sure. There's always some doubt. Sooner or later, you figure things out."
In this episode, Robert shares:
The story of losing Jill in 65 days:
How writing helped him process grief
The songs that came from loss and dating
Why Jill remains the love of his life
How collaboration across decades brought old lyrics to life
Some love doesn't end. It just changes form.
