In the middle of Singapore's central business district, the South Beach development encompasses a whole city block between the Marina District and the Civic District. The mixed-use, energy-efficient new urban quarter brings together places to live and work alongside shops, cafes, restaurants, a hotel, and public spaces. New #construction and the restoration of existing buildings were both components of the new urban quarter. The site is traversed by a broad pedestrian avenue that is planted and serves as a "green spine." This avenue is shielded from the elements of the tropical environment by a big canopy that also provides cover for public areas that are filled with light.
