Описание: Near-Death Drift Dive - Scuba Diving Accident and Incident - Mikomoto Island, Japan
This dive has haunted me with occasional cold-sweats for more than a decade. What would have happened if my DM had not asked that diver's air pressure? I don’t think it ever dawned on that diver how close they were to a potentially fatal cascade of events. As most experienced divers know, it's cascade events starting like this that can go totally sideways. Comments I’m happy to read/discuss include (but are not limited to):
1. General feedback about this dive incident.
2. What does AOW certification actually mean? (from the perspective of instructor, diver, and dive operation)
3. My decision to keep diving with that diver on the second day. I"ve taken some criticism for this over the years. It was a call I made in an effort to make the trip a learning opportunity for that diver, also considering I was able to be 1 on 1 with the diver. I had the dive leader support on the trip, so I made that call. Point taken, though...
4. Who is ultimately responsible for judging the appropriateness/safety of any particular dive? There are lots of great discussions about this on Scuba Board. Most of the reading I've done in the US context leans toward diver responsibility. In Japan, dive ops probably have a higher level of care than some other countries, for better or worse.
