In this episode of Vinyl Vibes, Jack is joined by Bosco Bosanac bass player of The Atlantics. Bosco and his family migrated to Australia in the late '40s. Growing up during the era of rock and roll it was bands like the Shadows and The Ventures that inspired Bosco greatly. On bass Bosco along with Peter Hood on drums and guitarists Theo Penglis and Eddy Matzenik formed an instrumental garage band in 1961. They soon decided to call themselves The Atlantics. In 1963 the band would be signed to CBS Records. They would release their first single Moon Man in February 1963. It was not a massive hit but created enough attention to ensure CBS would still record them. Their second single, released in July 1963, Bombora would be a number one hit in Australia. It would also be a hit worldwide making The Atlantics Australia's first internationally recognised music group. By 1964 the band would leave the surf sound behind and their popularity faded with the surf scene. By 1967 the band were no longer an instrumental group and were producing records with vocals such as their cult classic song "Come On". By 1970 the band stopped performing regularly for many years.
More recently in 2023, the band released their latest studio album "Still Making Waves". Bosco is still with the group after 60 years since their formation in 1963.
Jack phoned Bosco to discuss his early musical beginnings, his memories of migrating to Australia in the late '40s, the impact bands like the Shadows and Ventures had on him, the formation of the Atlantics in 1961, how the group decided on the name The Atlantics, how the group got signed to CBS Records, the recording of Moon Man and Bombora, the studio processes of the early '60s, what it was like having a number one hit in 1963, the bands innovative fourth single "War Of The Worlds", the groups work into the later '60s, the groups more recent work such as their latest album Still Making Waves.
"Jim and Peter were gonna go out one day...I think they were going to go to the royal easter show and then they had to lob it out because of the rain..and they stayed home and knocked off Bombora in about ten minutes or half an hour, so it didn't take them long. Peter had a part of a song and Jim had another part of another song and they put it together and Voilà you got Bombora" - Bosco Bosanac on this episode of Vinyl Vibes talking about the writing of the bands number one hit Bombora
