The city of Tsuruga is located in Fukui Prefecture.
Not so many Jewish people know that Tsuruga City has a strong connection
with Jewish history, especially in hard times in the past.
So, as a sign of appreciation, we must visit this important city.
There is a fascinating museum relating to our history,
beautiful and amazing temples and shrines,
a delicious, exotic food market, plus breathtaking nature and views.
So if you find it interesting and want to know more about Tsuruga and its
"Port of Humanity Museum,"
why don't you join my channel called "A Few Minutes with Kobayashi"?
The Tsuruga port has flourished since ancient times because of its excellent location.
In 1899, it opened its doors for international trading with foreign countries.
And later on, after the opening of the "Trans–Siberian Railway,"
Tsuruga became the main gate between Japan and Asia –
or Europe – and continued to thrive as an international port.
Learn about the History of this “Port of Humanity”
Learn about Tsuruga’s history as the “port of humanity” at the Port of Humanity Tsuruga Museum, including the acceptance of Polish children who were orphaned during the Russian Revolution and left in a harsh environment, as well as Jewish refugees trying to escape persecution by the Nazis with “visas for life” issued by Japan’s consular agent Sugihara Chiune. At this museum, visitors can see exhibits on the arrival of these refugees in Tsuruga, their connections with the people of Tsuruga, eyewitness accounts, and even a watch left by a Jewish refugee at the time.
