Today’s coffee-hour theme is one many of us know too well, even if we joke about it:
‘He married his mother,’
‘She’s looking for a father figure,’
‘I always end up parenting my partners,’
or ‘Why do I feel like the therapist in my own relationship?’
We’re going to talk about what’s happening underneath those jokes:
projecting other roles onto a potential partner.
So instead of seeing the person in front of us as who they really are, we start relating to them as if they were:
• a parent,
• a child,
• a therapist,
• a boss,
• a savior,
• or even a “fix-it project.”
And of course, they might be doing the same thing with us.”
