Interviewing witnesses is one of the most important stages in a petty cash fraud investigation. Before any suspect is interviewed, the investigator must first establish the facts through independent evidence and witness testimony. Witness interviews provide the investigator with an opportunity to understand how the petty cash system operates, identify irregularities, verify documentary evidence, uncover new leads, and determine who may have had the opportunity, authority, or motive to commit the fraud.

Professional investigators never begin with accusations. Instead, they build a solid factual foundation through systematic witness interviews. A well-conducted witness interview frequently provides enough evidence either to eliminate innocent employees from suspicion or to establish sufficient grounds for interviewing a suspect.

This stage should be conducted objectively, professionally, ethically, and without revealing unnecessary details that could compromise the investigation.
