We’re often told to play with a metronome, but perhaps it’s not always clear to us how fast we should set the metronome. I recommend between 60 and 160bpm. Slower than 60 becomes quite tricky to follow whereas faster than 160 usually feels frantic and doesn’t aid control and confidence. Here I discuss changing the metronome speed from crotchets (quarter notes) to quavers (eighth notes) in order to open up more options in tempo. The key principle to hold is play slowly, and go back to playing slowly even when you have played something fast in the past. Be accurate and make sure you can hear the metronome clearly over the saxophone, because it can throw out 90dB or so pretty easily. Use a device and headphones (I like one ear only) if that helps.
