We made planetfall in a region the preliminary orbital scans designated the "Ocher Waste"—a surprisingly accurate appellation. The dust here is a fine, reddish-brown silicon-ferrite compound, pervasive and aggressively abrasive.

Atmospheric pressure is a comfortable 1.03 Earth standard, but the gravity constant, ζ≈1.25g, has required a minor recalibration of my exoskeleton’s inertial dampeners. A small, persistent haze, a low-lying, ochre-tinted fog, dominates the climate. It's not a true precipitation fog, but rather a perpetual suspension of micro-particulates, held aloft by a peculiar local ionization effect. It’s what gives the "Distant Horizon" its name here—a horizon that is always receding, always veiled.

But the most compelling feature, and the reason for this excursion, is the array.

Stretching out into the perpetual gloom, precisely aligned and perfectly spaced, are the structures we have tentatively named the Sentinels. Colossal, cylindrical towers of dark, non-native basaltic concrete—a material unknown to us, yet unnervingly familiar in its engineering logic. They stand perhaps twenty-five Terran meters high, each capped with what appears to be a small, oxidized metal platform supporting a cluster of rudimentary, yet precisely oriented, antennae.

There are no signs of a current indigenous population, no thermal signatures, no complex radio emissions—only the dead monuments of a forgotten civilization, the Aeterna.

I measured the spacing between the first two Sentinels: exactly 1.86 kilometers. The precision is terrifying. The array stretches in perfect linear progression until the final structures are entirely swallowed by the atmospheric haze. Logically, this must have been a form of communication or energy transmission—a planetary beacon, perhaps, or a colossal harmonic resonator. But I stand here, a single human figure in a thousand square kilometers of desolation, and the prevailing sensation is not one of technological grandeur, but of profound, existential loneliness.

The great Terran philosopher, Marcus Aurelius, once wrote: "All that is harmonious for you, O Universe, is harmonious for me." I see order here—the perfect, silent order of the Sentinels—and it should bring intellectual comfort. Yet, the absence of the hands that built this, the silence where a civilization once hummed, makes the order itself cold, a mathematical statement of decay.

I took soil and atmosphere samples. The mineral composition shows high levels of rare-earth oxides, explaining the rich, dusky colors. However, the energy cost required to transport and construct these basalt-based Sentinels on a world of mostly silicon-ferrite suggests a civilization with either unimaginable resources or an almost religious dedication to this single, vast project.

A whisper of localized high-frequency static momentarily flared on my portable sensor before dissipating. An artifact of the fog, perhaps, or a ghost echo from the metallic antennae.
