The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has officially directed several states and union territories across India to conduct civil defence mock drills on May 7, 2025. This initiative aims to enhance emergency preparedness in light of recent escalations in regional tensions.

Key Measures in the Drill:
• Operationalization of Air Raid Warning Sirens: Testing early warning systems to ensure rapid dissemination of alerts.
• Training of Civilians and Students: Educating individuals on civil defence techniques to protect themselves during hostile attacks.
• Implementation of Crash Blackout Measures: Simulating urban blackouts to reduce visibility to enemy surveillance.
• Camouflaging Vital Installations: Early camouflage of critical infrastructure like power plants and government offices.
• Evacuation Plan Rehearsals: Updating and practicing evacuation strategies to ensure swift responses during emergencies.

These drills are scheduled to take place across 244 districts nationwide, involving coordination among local authorities, civil defence teams, students, and volunteers. The exercises are designed to simulate real-world scenarios, including air raid sirens, citywide blackouts, and evacuation procedures.

The directive follows the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025, which resulted in the loss of 26 lives and heightened tensions between India and Pakistan. In response, the Indian government has implemented several measures, including diplomatic actions and increased civil defence preparedness.
