We tend to imagine deep-sea disasters as slow, terrifying events—creaking metal, leaking water, and rising panic. But physics tells a different story.
If a pressure hull fails at extreme depth (3,800m), the result is a Catastrophic Implosion.
The water pressure is so immense (5,500 psi) that the hull collapses inward at supersonic speeds (about 1,500 mph). The entire event takes roughly 30 milliseconds (0.03 seconds).
Here is the "Mercy" of physics: The human brain takes about 150 milliseconds to process a sensory signal (pain) and realize something is happening.
This means the implosion happens faster than the speed of human thought. The crew is gone before their brains can even register the sound of the hull cracking.
