It’s Beef Week in Casino and a Camp Draft and Rodeo out at Tabulam Casino and I need to get away for a break and explore the country towns and the Richmond River and the off shots creeks. Heaps of historic little towns and several interesting buildings, particularly in Walker and Barker Streets, which range from Victorian times through to the Art Deco of the 1930s. And the best steak in Casino calls itself 'The Beef Capital' of New South Wales is held each May - the 'week' lasts for 12 days. With 4 pubs in town, I was in for a busy night. Casino has about 12,000 people in and around the area. And yes, Casino’s main street with groomed trees shout out to the (good work to the council workers) it is a thriving rural centre.

Hotel Cecil
You will find the Hotel Cecil on the corner of Barker Street and Centre Street. It is a significant local hotel dating from 1919 when it was moved to its present site from its original position in Walker Street. It was cut into sections and hauled by bullock teams. Dropped in for a beer.

Tattersalls Hotel
Along Barker Street towards the river the Tattersalls Hotel which was opened in 1859 and consequently is Casino's oldest pub and fist business in town. It was built by the local mail contractor, John Brown, The Tatts Pub would be the best pub in town today as it was back in the day it was the hotel to stay, I dropped in for a beer and meet the team the pub has entertainment, accommodation with on suits and king sized beds, a good wine list and a restaurant and beergarden for the kids and indoor dining room Fillet steak with veg the go.
Original known as 'The Falls' in the early 1850s, and in 1853 Assistant Surveyor W. Darke had surveyed a site for a village. That year both a General Store and a Hotel - the Durham Ox Inn - were built in what is now Richmond Street. Durham Ox Hotel, which was written about by many early travellers. It became the general meeting place, and all business of any consequence was transacted there. For years it was the only hotel between Grafton and Ipswich
Later that year a policeman arrived in 'The Falls'. And in 1854 a bark hut was built. It was the town's first Court House and then in1855 the Surveyor General, Sir Thomas Mitchell, declared the need for a town in the valley with suburban allotments and a proper subdivision. 'The Falls' which was renamed Casino, and the town was officially gazetted in, and in 1859 a doctor arrived in the town and a second hotel, Tattersalls, was opened.

The current pub opened for business in 1955, Originally known as the Lion Hotel, and later the South Casino Hotel, the story of how the Charcoal Inn got its name is interesting- Matthew Dougherty owned the South Casino Hotel and on 28th of October 1941 a fire almost destroyed the old landmark. The upper floor of the pub was destroyed by the blaze, but the beer continued to flow in the undamaged bar on the ground floor. The local troops, who patronised the pub, began referring to the pub as the Charcoal Inn. Dougherty liked the name, and it stuck. On August 9, 1945, The Charcoal Inn’. When the application came before the Licensing Magistrate (Mr. G. L. Berry) he reportedly was inclined to regard it as frivolous but, with a shrug of his shoulders, said: “Well, if that’s the name they want they may as well have it”. He officially changed the sign in 1945, before the old place was demolished 10 years later and replaced with the current structure.
