The Cashtown Inn, located near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, played a significant role during the Civil War, particularly during the Gettysburg Campaign of 1863.
The inn served as the headquarters for several Confederate officers and staff, including Generals A.P. Hill, John D. Imboden, and Henry Heth. General Hill, due to illness, found it a suitable place to rest while planning strategy.
Robert E. Lee had ordered his army to concentrate at Cashtown, and it's possible the Battle of Gettysburg could have occurred there if not for events on July 1st. Hundreds of Lee's supply wagons and artillery were also stationed in the area.
The inn's basement was used as a field hospital during the Battle of Gettysburg, treating Confederate casualties. Amputations were frequently performed there, and it is said that piles of severed limbs blocked sunlight from the basement windows.
Following the battle, General John Imboden used the inn to organize the evacuation of wounded Confederate troops back to Virginia.
Historians believe that more Confederate generals passed through the Cashtown Inn than any other building north of Richmond.
Cashtown was strategically important due to its location along Lee's supply line to Virginia.
The inn is known for its paranormal activity, potentially linked to its history as a field hospital during the battle.
The Cashtown Inn provides a tangible link to the dramatic events of the Gettysburg Campaign and offers a glimpse into the human cost of the Civil War.
