Vesperal Divine Liturgy for the Sunday after Theophany, Our Venerable Father Theodosius, Post-festive day of the Theophany, January 10, 2026
Our venerable father Theodosius, founder of the common life, abbot, a friend of Saint Sabbas, who, after a long solitary life permitted many disciples to assemble as companions to himself. In monasteries that he built, he cultivated the common life, until, having suffered many things for the true faith, the centenarian finally rested in the peace of Christ. (529)
The holy martyr Tatiana, who died in Rome under Emperor Alexander Severus. (c.227)
Theophany, the commemoration of Jesus’ baptism, is continued by remembering John, the baptizer, the prophet intimately connected with this feast. John is very closely connected to the Lord’s whole life. Conceived six months before him, he leaps in his mother Elizabeth’s womb when Mary visits. He announces the coming of the one who would baptize with fire and the Spirit, proclaiming a new life for humanity. He even precedes Jesus into Hades, the Kingdom of Death about to be destroyed, to announce liberation to the souls held there. He is, therefore, the model of sanctity manifesting not his own glory, but that of the Son of God. In the gospel today, he points to Jesus, ““Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. He is the one of whom I said, ‘A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.’ (John 1:29-30)” As a true faithful, in authentic humility he says, “He must increase; I must decrease. (John 3:30)” Christianity is the imitation of Christ, who taught that anyone who would follow him must take up his cross, and be willing to give up our lives, to love God with all our heart and our neighbor as ourselves - even more than ourselves. At the same time, faithful Christianity also means imitating John the Baptist. Like him, we must “prepare the way of the Lord,” by the ascetical struggle, discipline of our souls and bodies, so that they can be filled with Christ. To venerate John in spirit is not an easy task, but one that must be undertaken if we are ever to be in the bridegroom’s party. Please be generous and consider a gift by visiting:
