Коль славенъ нашъ Господь въ Сіонѣ is the hymn composed on the spring of 1794 by composer Dmitry Bortnyanski, to the lyrics of Mikhail Kheraskov. Widely known as the unofficial anthem of the Russian empire from the late 18th century until the official adoption of "God Save the Tsar" in the 1830s, it was described in 19th century printed notations to be the "Russian national hymn". From 1856 to 1917 the clocks of the Spasskaya Tower in the Moscow Kremlin rang the melody of "How Glorious" alongside the Preobrazhensky March. It was also widely used on White-controlled territories during the Russian Civil War, as well as in immigration. The lyrics of the hymn, rich in Christian symbolism, are based on the 47th Psalm, while its meter resembles that of the Great Znamenny chant.
