Being nice may seem like the most obvious part of great customer service, but it’s an important message to keep in mind. In fact, it’s so important that I gave an entire customer service speech about it - in under 2 minutes.
You see, I was the closing keynote speaker for an event that included several other speakers. The client told me to end on time no matter what. I decided to accept the challenge.
As we got closer to the time, I realized the speakers ahead of me were taking more time than expected. And sure enough, by the time I walked on stage I just had 2 minutes. So what did I do?
I first told the audience to imagine I had just been introduced and that they had just finished applauding. Then I delivered the shortest customer service speech ever: “Be nice!”
That was it. As I exited the stage, I stopped a few feet short. I still had a minute left after all. I explained that being nice is the backbone of a great customer service experience. It’s simple, but vitally important. After another comment or two, I exited the stage in just under two minutes.
So, why did I choose to make this the message of my speech? Well, unless you’re nice to your customers, even the right answer to their query can only be at best a bittersweet experience.
Now, I know this idea is ridiculously simple. We shouldn’t even need to be reminded about it. But sadly, a customer service speech about being nice is sometimes what we need to hear.
