General Peter van Uhm Lost His Son in War. A MOTIVATIONAL LIFE STORY! How to MOVE FORWARD in CRISIS?
In this Power webinar we had an interactive conversation with General Ret. Peter van Uhm, a four-star general in the Royal Netherlands Army and the Chief of Defence. He is a well-known and highly respected person in The Netherlands. Through his TEDx performance Peter van Uhm is also very popular with millions of people around the world.
He has had an outstanding career over four decades in the Dutch military.
In The Netherlands, he is known for his personal tragedy. On 18 April 2008, one day after Van Uhm was appointed the Chief of Defence, his son (First Lieutenant Dennis van Uhm) was killed in a roadside bombing in Uruzgan. Van Uhm’s incredibly dignified and human response has astounded many.
What can we learn from his life lessons in the world we live in today?
Peter van Uhm says: "Together we will have to find the new form and course in society because one thing is certain: it will never be the way it was again".
Peter van Uhm learned during his life that if you think you are having a hard time, you should look at others. You will see people who need your help. Start helping them: you will help yourself too. He also learned that in these times people often want to solve their problems of today, creating the problems of tomorrow. So keep the longer term and responsibility for others in mind. Peter van Uhm will underline his thoughts with personal stories.
His TEDtalk has been watched by millions of people around the world.
Peter van Uhm was the Chief of Defense, but that does not mean he is pro-war. At TEDxAmsterdam he explained how his career is one shaped by a love of peace, not a desire for bloodshed -- and why we need armies if we want peace.
