The national anthem of the Philippines, "Lupang Hinirang", as broadcast during the centenary of the Philippine declaration of independence in 1998. Several television stations in the country still use this in starting and ending their daily transmissions.
---
The lyrics of the anthem originate from a poem entitled "Filipinas" written in Spanish by Jose Palma. Its music was composed by Julian Felipe upon the instructions of President Emilio Aguinaldo.
President Aguinaldo was pleased with Felipe's composition, entitled "Marcha Nacional Filipina", as well as the crowds who witnessed Aguinaldo proclaiming Philippine independence at Kawit, Cavite on 12 June 1898. When the country was placed under American control, Filipino national symbols were banned. The repeal of the Flag Law in 1919 allowed Camilo Osias to write an English translation of the anthem --- "The Philippine Hymn".
Although Tagalog translations began appearing in the 1940s, it was under President Ramon Magsaysay that the Filipino translation of the anthem, 'Lupang Hinirang', was sung for the first time. Minor revisions were done in the 1960s. The Filipino lyrics were confirmed by Republic Act No. 8491 (the "Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines") in 1998, abandoning use of both the Spanish and English versions.
'LUPANG HINIRANG'
~Felipe/Palma
Bayang Magiliw,
Perlas ng Silanganan
Alab ng puso
Sa Dibdib mo'y buhay.
Lupang Hinirang,
Duyan ka ng magiting,
Sa manlulupig
Di ka pasisiil
Sa dagat at bundok,
Sa simoy at sa langit mong bughaw,
May dilag ang tula
At awit sa paglayang minamahal.
Ang kislap ng watawat mo'y
Tagumpay na nagniningning;
Ang bituin at araw niya,
Kailan pa ma'y di magdidilim
Lupa ng araw, ng luwalhati't pagsinta,
Buhay ay langit sa piling mo;
Aming ligaya na pag may mang-aapi,
Ang mamatay nang dahil sa iyo.
