Today at Château de Razac, we return to the carriage house attached to the manoir to complete the repair of the damaged lintel.
The old rotten beam has now been replaced using two new wooden beams, restoring the strength needed to support the masonry above. The stones that were originally removed — along with several newly cut stones — are cemented back into place, rebuilding the opening piece by piece.
With the structure secure, the temporary wooden boards and Acrow supports (Acros) that were holding everything in position can finally be removed. Any remaining gaps are filled with stone and mortar, ensuring the wall is once again stable and properly tied together.
With the structural work finished, attention turns to cleaning up the site. We tidy the milking parlour hanger area and begin improving the road leading towards the manoir. Old broken roof tiles are crushed and spread along the drive, helping to fill holes and provide a temporary surface.
Any salvaged stone from the roofing works is also reused to help reinstate sections of the drive. During periods of bad weather the ground here can quickly become muddy and difficult to access, so these temporary repairs will help keep the site usable until more permanent work can be done in the future.
This video also marks the end of a chapter, as the roofing team finishes their work on this phase of the project. Over the months they have taken great care of the site and the buildings, and in that time we’ve come to think of them as friends. It’s always a little sad to see them leave, but we’re grateful for everything they’ve done to help bring the château back to life.
We look forward to the day they return as the restoration of Château de Razac continues.
