“In which aspects are we all the same and in which aspects are we different?”
I can look at that question in myriad ways. From the point of diversity …as it is being discussed in boardrooms and political circles nowadays or from the point of duality and non-duality as per some spiritual philosophies.
However, many people across the globe live out the experience before questions start in their minds.
My guest some days ago, Susanne Jasper - intercultural training and translations, is one such person. Born in Slovakia during the Communist regime, she has witnessed the oppression of those years along with her parents who also served time in prison for not going along with the regime. The country at that time was called Czechoslovakia.
Then the family managed to escape to South Germany where she spent her childhood though she declared to her parents that she would leave Germany when she grew up.
True to her words, when she finished her graduation with law, she met her future American husband who was then posted in Germany….and she accompanied him to the US. Since many years she still lives in the US in a multiracial family which also now has 2 kids.
4 cultures play out in the family since her husband is originally from Trinidad. Susanne also met the face of “racism” in the US since her husband is from another "race".
The question which seemed to define her destined life has been: “In which aspects are we all the same and in which aspects are we different?”
When I caught up with Susanne for the podcast series 2Between the East and the West", it was like bringing different worlds in person on the table.…Central Europe, Western Europe and the Western West… i.e the US. From intercultural relationships to intercultural workplaces, oppression, racism, diversity, values and third culture kids, our conversation spanned her life across multiple topics which are becoming more and more pertinent today.
Most important was the validation that intercultural training is so so valid not just for workplaces but for healthy relationships. And healthy relationships make for more competent human beings....you know where I am going with this...hear, hear, hear!
So, just before the weekend, do give this episode your ears if you get curious.
