In spring of 1958, Buddy Holly started making plans to produce new artists and sign them to his new record label "Prism Records". He produced and signed Waylon Jennings (who would become a country music legend) and also a New York singer called Lou Giordano. Buddy & Phil Everly teamed up and co-produced Lou, and both wrote/produced songs for him. Buddy wrote "Stay Close To Me" (which he never recorded himself, that we know of) and Phil wrote and produced "Don'tcha Know". Buddy played guitar on the sessions, possibly Phil too on "Don'tcha Know" and they both sang quirky backing vocals on "Don'tcha Know" also. Something to do with union rates for backing singers and keeping costs down.
The other Waylon cut is called "When Sin Stops", a song written by Bob Venable, a member of The Nighthawks, who originally recorded their song at Norman Petty's studio in Clovis. Buddy heard their recording there and asked if he could record it for himself/The Crickets, but they were reluctant as they wanted too see how their release would do. As a compromise, they agreed for an unknown then Waylon Jennings could record it. For those sessions, Buddy arranged for sax player King Curtis (The Coasters) to come in and play sax.
Buddy Holly was on a trajectory, he was learning more and more about the music business. Started producing new artists, set up his own label, made plans to start his own Music Publishing company, and a Pressing Plant in his home town of Lubbock, Texas. He started using strings and worked with orchestras in New York. He wanted to record a duet album with Ray Charles, wanted to introduce more country & cajun into rock & roll, wanted to learn what he could then go back to Texas. He was also one of the first to home record, which became popular in the 90s onwards with home recording set up's musicians had. Buddy recorded new songs and some covers in his New York apartment in fall/winter 1958 (they are known as The Apartment Tapes".
He turned 22 in September 58 ! He planned all this ten years before The Beatles created Apple Records. It is my opinion that Buddy Holly would have became a top producer and also he would have became a top composer too, quite probably scoring for movies (he started taking acting lessons).
Buddy Holly was 22 years old when he died. I'll say that again. Buddy Holly was only 22 years old !
