Salt Lake Co. Jail running out of room, forced to release some inmates early

Описание: The Salt Lake County Jail is nearing full capacity, yet at the same time, the capacity at the jail is shrinking.

Sheriff Rosie Rivera explained Tuesday to the Salt Lake County Council that the jail's capacity has been reduced as dozens more beds are now allocated for mental health needs.

"The jail was not designed to house the amount of folks who suffer from mental health issues that we currently have to deal with," Rivera said.

The facility's new maximum capacity is 2,101 inmates, and as of Tuesday, it houses 1,984 -- 94% of its capacity.
