We generalize the idea of a 2x2 or 3x3 determinant using the idea of cofactors. We eliminate the row and column in which an entry resides and compute the smaller (inductively) defined determinant. The determinant is then a signed inner product of the cofactor with the entry of the original matrix. Laplace's Theorem asserts that you can expand along any row or column in the matrix.
