SS Taiping was a Chinese luxury freighter, owned by the China United Shipping Company, with a displacement of 2,489 gross tons, operated by Cai Tianduo in Shanghai.
Near the end of the Chinese Civil War, a large number of refugees fled the mainland of China in a hurry.
She was originally expected to leave Shanghai at 4 p.m., however, the sailing was delayed by 2 hours. On January 27, 1949, Lunar New Year Eve, SS Taiping carried a total of nearly 1,000 people — 508 passengers with tickets, 124 crew members, about 300 without tickets — and heavy cargo, including 600 tons of steel bars, more than 100 tons of Southeast Daily printing equipment and white newspapers, more than 1,000 boxes of important bank, governmental, and commercial documents.
Sailing from Shanghai, China to Keelung, Taiwan, SS Taiping collided with the freight vessel Jianyuan and sunk due to overloading and sailing at night without turning on the navigation lights, resulting in the deaths of nearly a thousand passengers.
This year marks the 74th anniversary of her sinking. May her passengers who have perished rest in peace, and for this video, a tribute to all who were onboard.
