Long before the world celebrated Black champions at Wimbledon, a Jamaican pioneer had already stepped onto tennis’s biggest stage. Bertrand Milbourne Clark made history in 1924 as the first Black player to compete at the Wimbledon Championships.
A seven-time All-Jamaica champion and winner of 19 national titles, Clark also excelled in cricket and golf while working as a civil servant. He even partnered the future King George VI in a doubles match during a royal visit to Jamaica.
Overshadowed for decades, his story resurfaced in 2019, correcting history and placing Jamaica at the roots of Black tennis excellence—long before Arthur Ashe or Althea Gibson.
Clark’s legacy proves that some pioneers changed history quietly—but powerfully.
