Britain's Prince Edward, the youngest son of Queen Elizabeth the Second, is to marry his long-term girlfriend later this year.

Sophie Rhys-Jones is a career woman who runs her own business, which she is set to continue after her marriage.

The couple hope to marry in the late spring or summer in what will be an intimate family occasion.

0005: Prince Edward's romance with Sophie Rys Jones first became public knowledge five years ago. Edward, a 34 year old television producer met the 33-year-old public relations executive when they worked together.

0017: He finally popped the question over the Christmas holiday.

0020: The length of their courtship suggests the couple wanted to be sure of their feelings before making a final commitment.

0027: Both work in the media and will be mindful of avoiding the glare of publicity which has been so destructive in other royal marriages.

0032: At a photo-call at St James's Palace in London, the Prince and Sophie reluctantly exchanged a kiss for the cameras. (Kiss at 0037)

0039: They showed off the engagement ring Edward had given his fiancée - and described the proposal.

0044: SOUNDBITE: "So I managed to take her completely by surprise. She had no idea that it was coming - which was what I really wanted to do. 0109: Before the announcement was made, the couple visited Buckingham Palace to see the Queen, who is said to be delighted at the engagement. For the tourists outside the palace, the news added to the excitement.
