Chris Andersen, better known as “Birdman,” left a lasting impression during his time with the Denver Nuggets—a chapter filled with energy, hustle, and highlight-reel defense. Andersen first joined the Nuggets in 2001, becoming the NBA’s original D-League call-up, and returned for a second stint from 2008 to 2012, where he truly thrived in Denver’s uptempo style.
During his Nuggets career, Andersen posted averages of 5.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, and an outstanding 1.4 blocks per game—all in less than 20 minutes a night. Birdman was a defensive anchor and rim protector, finishing top 10 in blocks during several seasons with Denver and earning a reputation for game-changing hustle plays. His best season came in 2008-09, where he averaged 6.4 points, 6.2 rebounds, and a massive 2.5 blocks per game, helping the Nuggets reach the Western Conference Finals. Andersen never made an All-Star team, but in 2009, he finished 9th in Defensive Player of the Year voting and 8th for Sixth Man of the Year, reflecting league-wide respect for his impact off the bench.
Birdman competed in two NBA Slam Dunk contests and became a fan favorite for his wild style and relentless effort. Though Andersen’s championship came later in Miami, his Nuggets tenure showcased his transformation from D-League underdog to elite NBA defender. He ranks among the franchise leaders in blocked shots and provided the backbone for Denver’s defense during several playoff runs.
