Noir is something that is hard to define. While most people can probably tell you what noir looks like by bringing up trench-coat detectives, Venetian blinds, and bar fights after a glass of scotch on the rocks, it's difficult to pinpoint exactly what noir is. I mean, why do we struggle to explain a genre that has had such a monumental impact on global culture for more than 50 years? Can noir really even be called a genre?
On my livestream I presented a powerpoint I created. I attempted to help others understand what noir means in the context of film, games and literature. The aim was the educate others about the noir genre while also better defining what the genre means to me. The stream covers some topics I researched over a few years and provides examples of actual noir. In the spirit of my writing passion, I include at the end a rough guide to writing noir.
