Primitive camping with kids at Myakka River State Park in Florida.
We hiked out to Bee Island for our first primitive backpacking trip as a family, carrying everything we needed and camping overnight in one of the park’s backcountry sites.
This video shows what primitive camping with kids is actually like — the pace of the hike, the terrain, the campsites on Bee Island, and the overall experience of backpacking as a family in Florida.
There’s no rushing, no explaining on camera, just what it feels like to move through a quiet, undeveloped place with kids.
Bee Island is one of four primitive campsites in Myakka River State Park.
There are no bathrooms, no running water, and no amenities.
Everything must be packed in and packed out, which is part of what makes the experience simple, calm, and very different from traditional camping.
We walked at an easy pace, stopped once for a short break, and reached the island in just under 2.5 hours.
Along the way we passed through shaded trail, open Florida prairie, and saw wildlife before even reaching the campsite.
If you’re planning primitive camping with kids, backpacking or camping in Florida, or considering Bee Island in Myakka River State Park, this video shows what to realistically expect — without hype, fear, or exaggeration.

-Small trowel/shovel for bathroom needs
-Sleeping gear and tents
🌿 A note on primitive Florida camping
Bee Island is a true primitive campsite.
Campers are responsible for handling waste properly and following Leave No Trace principles.
This is part of what keeps the island quiet, undeveloped, and peaceful.
