BIGGEST MISTAKES WHEN PRICING LAWN CARE SERVICE –
Paying yourself a “High Dollar an HR Wage”… Say $30 an hr. This is TERRIBLE. So many expenses cut into you making money… Gas, equipment costs, maintenance costs, insurance… you will have no money left over even when you think you do. This is the number one mistake I see people making… Usually a solo guy doing this. CHARGE MORE!!!
Charging $1 a minute. I don’t know where this whole thing got started, maybe back in the 80’s when this may have been a decent rate, but if you go strictly off a dollar a minute you will go out of business. PERIOD. That means that if it takes you 20 minutes to do a yard then you should be charging $20. That is HORRIBLE. We already discussed we don’t go to a yard for less than $39. Plus the majority of our yards can be done by one person in under 20 minutes, and we charge $45 to most of these yards. If you are charging a dollar a minute you are losing a ton of money.
Reducing prices for neighboring homes is the 3rd mistake I see when pricing. I learned my lesson on this very early on… I realize it may seem like a good idea to just give a discounted rate to acquire more clients in a neighborhood you area already in, but the fact is you can get the SAME RATES as your original client if you just do good work for a while on there yard. Also, if you get dropped or lose the original client, now you are doing discounted work that is not profitable. Finally, NEIGHBORS TALK. You’re going to have a hard time explaining why you charge a neighbor $50 then the other neighbor $35 a service. That is a QUICK WAY to get DROPPED or have a bad relationship develop with your client.
