Does the heat treatment increase the color that much?

Heat treatment is a very common treatment in some types of gems. You may read that at least 95% of rubies and sapphires are treated; HOWEVER, that’s the very LEAST of what has been done to most of this percentage. Such as diffusing in other elements to alter the colour (known as ‘diffusion treatment) or maybe using heat to improve the colour and then healing fissures with the use of flux (‘flux-assisting heat treatment’ or ‘flux healing’). There's more!

A treated gem may have a different value than an untreated one of equal appearance – the exact value depends on the quality of the resulting gem and the exact treatment it was subjected to.
