Effective January 12, 2026, the rapid 500 received an "upgrade", in which two articulated buses will be serving this route on weekdays morning, until approximately noon, then respectively return to the 22 and 523. Both of these runs are usually operated by 8300s, but in special occasions you will also find 4300s, especially on the run with 523.
I finally had the opportunity to try this combination, as I believe the 500 always deserve bigger buses to accommodate large amount of SJSU students traveling from BART to campus. With this "upgrade", it is definitely better as you can see, inside the bus it is not as crowded as a 40-foot bus.
Special note: This bus's BAE transmission sounds extra sharp and extreme!
