'Critical Conversations: Adultification Bias Against Black Girls' Webinar - April 6, 2021

The conversation described groundbreaking original research on Adultification Bias and its implications in recent incidents like the one in Rochester, NY, in which police pepper-sprayed a 9-year-old Black girl after she was handcuffed and accused her of "acting like a child".

The Initiative on Gender Justice and Opportunity has been leading critical conversations about Adultification Bias since the 2017 release of its groundbreaking report, Girlhood Interrupted: The Erasure of Black Girls’ Childhood, authored by Rebecca Epstein and Dr. Jamilia Blake of Texas A&M University. The report found that adults view Black girls as less innocent and more adult-like than white girls of the same age – even in the 5- to 9-year-old age bracket.
