I am shaken from my morbid reverie
when a little girl wearing purple rainboots taps me on the shoulder
and solemnly shows me a palmful of glitter.
I tell her it is beautiful,
and she teaches me to carefully
dip my finger into the pool of glimmer.
She says I can wear it,
that I can do anything with it.
I grin and tell her it’s pixie dust
as I sprinkle it over my head— a fingertip’s worth of light,
silently hoping that I can rediscover
enough happy thoughts to fly.

I breathe deeply for a moment wonder
at finding that I’m dying a little less,
and I remember the shape of my smile.
