Which Revolutionary War battle did Thomas Jefferson describe as "the turn of the tide of success"? While you might think it was the Battle of Trenton or the Battle of Saratoga. It was a battle that actually occurred in the Southern Theater. You see, in 1780 the Patriot cause in the South was collapsing. They had suffered a crushing defeat at the Battle of Camden and had suffered one of the worst defeats of the entire war at Charleston, leaving the Carolinas largely under British control. And even worse, British Major Patrick Ferguson and his loyalist force were sent to the Appalachian mountains in order to crush more patriots. However, Colonel William Campbell assembled a force of guerrilla fighters known as overmountain men. So even though Major Ferguson set up in a defensive position, these rugged overmountain men knew the terrain so well they easily snuck up and surrounded the loyalist force. The victory at the Battle of King's Mountain greatly improved Patriot morale while weakening the Loyalists. Additionally, General Cornwallis was forced to delay his invasion of North Carolina.
