South African officials have assured the United States that Pretoria will not interfere with Washington’s controversial refugee resettlement programme for South Africans, following tensions over raids on a US processing centre and diplomatic disputes.
The agreement came after a closed-door meeting in late December where South African diplomats clarified that, while they reject claims that white South Africans face genocide, the government will respect the right of citizens to relocate and will not disrupt the programme if it operates within South African law.
