First of all, to give a brief history rundown for the ones who don't know anything about Brian Chadwick or the following story. Brian Chadwick was the owner and operator of two twin engine de Havilland aircraft, Dragonfly ZK-AFB and Dominie ZK-BCP in the early 1960s.
Chadwick and the Dragonfly disappeared along with four passengers on a trip from Christchurch to Milford on the 12th of February 1962. Tragically and sadly from that day to this, no trace has ever been found of that aircraft or its occupants.
Over the year's there has been a lot of talk about how Brian Chadwick, the pilot of his ill-fated flight of Dragonfly ZK-AFB was a low flyer and took risks. No movie film has ever surfaced showing what the flights were like that were piloted by him, ...until today that is.
Now for the first time after almost 60 years, this rare piece of colour 8mm movie film from mid January 1962, shows us just what it was like back then on a flight from Christchurch to Milford Sound, and then from Milford Sound to Queenstown, then back to Christchurch via Lake Tekapo.
The film was sent out to us by Robin Fautley from Essex England.
He scanned and digitalized the film with special equipment, and then sent it out for us to put it through special software to remove grain/noise, dust, and scratches.
Going back in time to mid January 1962, a young thirteen year old Robin Fautley and his family were on holiday from England and took a trip down to Milford Sound in Chadwick's de Havilland Dominie ZK-BCP, that was owned and piloted by Brian Chadwick. Robin's father and mother "Albert and Daisy Fautley" recorded the flight on 8mm colour film.
This film is very important because it gives one a first hand account of where Brian Chadwick sometimes flew, and also how low he flew. In some places it's hard to see the location of some of the places, but you can definitely recognise many of the locations.
When Dragonfly ZK-AFB and its ill-fated occupants disappeared a few weeks later on the 12th of February 1962, Robin's father who heard where Brian Chadwick's mother and father lived in England, (they lived not very far away from where the Fautley family lived) later took his film to show them what was probably the last movie film ever taken of Chadwick.
Unfortunately YouTube doesn’t allow much writing, but for anyone interested in seeing more, here’s a link to our Facebook page where you can read more about the film… / 199489818802169
